In the first week of fall, Jack decided to drop a surprise visit to his friend, Hazel, who had just recently taken up a new job at the pet shop. It had been her dream to work with animals, so Jack was excited to see how she was enjoying herself in her new place of work. To his surprise though, things weren't going so smoothly. Poor Hazel's bad luck decided to tag along, and haunt her through the help of an adorable little golden retriever!
Being so lively, the pup caused a lot of mischief. Hazel confided in Jack, that she feared the pup would never find a home or an owner who'd want him. After all, who could put up with so many problems caused by one person? Er, pet! Obviously, this really hit close to home, for Hazel.
Luckily Jack was by her side, giving her reassurance and a promise that their new found puppy friend wouldn't end up alone. Hazel believed him, but feared something would go terribly wrong after Jack had taken a peek at both her eyes! Now he was cursed! Or at least she believed him to be, because of an insecurity that she had never told any one about.
But the days went by, and Jack had stayed by her side. The two did their best to try and show the puppy good behavior, but to no avail. Despite all that, both Jack and Hazel grew closer to one another, and looked forward to their afternoons spent together. They became attached to their animal friend, even naming it "Pancake".
Finally came the day both had begun to be fearful of. Hazel showed up to work, only to find that Pancake had been bought. She should've been happy, but she couldn't help but think back on the times she and Jack had spent raising the dog. She blamed her bad luck for taking this away from her, without even giving her the chance to say her goodbyes.
Distraught, Hazel runs to find Jack and tell him the news. With a heavy heart, she bursts into his yard-... only to find him there with a friend. A four legged, ball of sunshine: Pancake !! Confused, she stared from Jack, to the new dog house he was working on, and finally to the puppy. The carpenter had wanted to surprise her with the news himself, but Hazel had beat him to it. He had decided to give Pancake a home, that way Hazel could rest assured that he was in good hands. Plus... now she could visit, when ever she'd like.
Seeing what Jack had done for her, for them, brought Hazel to tears. As she wiped them away, and brushed her bangs back, she looked into his eyes without fear of her 'curse'. She knew her bad luck would be here to stay, but it would never chase Jack away.
...and in that moment, he'd finally earned her trust.
